I love Josephine Baker so much...her face resides on the intriguing edge of cartoon and realism. I also find her to be one of the most interesting women in history -- she lived such a unconventional life and had an incredible impact on the entertainment world (and many kids!)~
For those of you unfamiliar with her work as an actress/jazz singer/burlesque dancer/spy/etc., she's one of the first few people (if I'm not mistaken) to sing the song "Blue Skies". She did a song called "Blackbird, Blackbird" as well.
11"x14" paper, graphite pencils, and somewhat a deviation from the elderly woman I drew last night. I'm happy with how fuzzy this turned out -- it's not the fault of my camera this time.
Thou swell, thou pretty! This is frightfully delightful—her spitting image, really; I've never heard it better described, I shall actually quote you on this one: “her face resides on the intriguing edge of cartoon and realism.” Well put indeed! I once had a figure of the amount of proposals Ms. Baker supposedly received during what I think was her first tour of America, and I can't seem to recall it now but it was an absolutely ridiculous amount, I assure you. What a beautiful drawing this is!
She is absolutely fascinating. You can find videos of her in her later years (and youth) on Youtube and it's mind-boggling to me. I feel like she's arguably one of the first "pop" celebrities in history -- she was as flamboyant as Lady Gaga, had the whole "I'm going to adopt a child from every county" thing going for her (Angelina Jolie syndrome), and was just a goofball on stage.:') Very animated but lovely all the same.
